Ballarat Station pedestrian overpass lifted into place

A new pedestrian overpass measuring 28 metres and 65 tonnes, has been lifted into place at Ballarat Station as part of the precinct’s accessibility upgrade.

The prefabricated overpass was shipped from Tasmania in August before being fully assembled and lifted into place by a 750-tonne crane.

The big lift is part of work to upgrade accessibility at Ballarat Station, installing a pedestrian overpass with a passenger lift and stairs to both platforms, upgraded lighting, tactiles and landscaping.

A new, accessible northern entrance opened in August following the installation of a ramp, stairs, handrails and an automatic door. The overpass, stairs and lifts will open in April 2026.

The purpose-built pedestrian overpass has been finished in aluminium cladding featuring a series of curves to reflect the heritage ironwork around the platform canopies.

The silver-grey cladding also features a unique pattern of perforations designed to enable transparency and good visibility for station users, while providing protection from the weather.

With the pedestrian overpass in place crews will get on with installing lighting, tiling, handrails and tactiles on the two staircases and finishing the internal fit-out and electrical works on the overpass.

Glaziers will install the glass in the lifts, lift shafts and the ‘belvedere’ balconies– elevated viewing areas with glass walls in both lift landings.

The finishing touches will be completed in April 2026, when the new overpass, stairs and lifts will open to the public.
