Ballarat Station prepares for big lift

Crews at Ballarat are gearing up for the mammoth task of lifting a 65-tonne pedestrian overpass and 2 lifts into place at Ballarat Station.

Measuring 28m long, the purpose-built pedestrian overpass will improve accessibility at Ballarat Station, with a lift and stairs to each platform, upgraded lighting and tactiles.

The overpass has been finished with aluminium cladding featuring a series of curves to reflect the heritage ironwork around the platform canopies and a perforated design to ensure good visibility for station users, while providing protection from the weather.

While the lift takes place, V/Line crews will also be working in the rail corridor to complete scheduled maintenance on the Ballarat Line.

To allow this work to be done safely, V/Line coaches will replace trains between Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh from first service, Tuesday 18 November to last service, Friday 28 November.

Ballarat Station will also be closed from 9pm, Friday 21 November to 3pm, Sunday 23 November for essential electrical works, with no access to platforms, toilets, the ticketing office or businesses in the station building during this time. Accessible, temporary toilets will be available on the southern side of the station.

The Level Crossing Removal Project is working with local businesses to support them during these works.

A new, accessible northern entrance was opened in August following the installation of a ramp, stairs, handrails and an automatic swing door.

Following the overpass lift, work crews will continue installing lighting, tiling, handrails, tactiles on the 2 staircases and finishing the internal fit out and electrical works ahead of the overpass, stairs and lifts opening in 2026.
