Ballarat Station's new pedestrian overpass is now open, making it safer and easier for all users to access public transport.

The opening of the overpass completes the Ballarat Station Upgrade, and features stair and lift access to each platform to enable people with disability, luggage or prams to cross the rail line without needing to leave the station.

The 28m pedestrian overpass is wide enough for 2 wheelchairs or mobility scooters to pass each other, making it easier for people with mobility needs to access public transport.

The overpass design was developed in consultation with disability advocacy groups and endorsed by Heritage Victoria, reflecting the community’s preference for a design that honours the station’s heritage, while reducing the visual impacts on existing buildings.

Its’ aluminium cladding features a series of curves to reflect the heritage ironwork on the platform canopies, and a perforated design to ensure good visibility for station users, while providing protection from the weather.

Open belvedere balconies with glass balustrades in the lift landings have been designed to provide scenic views of the clock tower and train hall.

Accessibility upgrades to the station’s northern entrance were completed last year, including a new ramp, stairs, handrails and automatic swing door.
