A new accessible pedestrian overpass with lift and stair access is set to open at Ballarat Station, making it easier for all users to change platforms and move around the station precinct.
From Monday 30 March, people with disability, luggage or prams will no longer have to exit Ballarat Station and use the Lydiard Street level crossing to change platforms.
Instead, they will be able to use lifts or stairs to access the new, aluminium clad overpass featuring a series of curves in a nod to the station’s heritage ironwork, and ‘belvedere’ balconies offering an elevated view of the heritage station building.
The silver-grey cladding also features a unique pattern of perforations designed to enable transparency and good visibility for station users, while providing protection from the weather.
To celebrate the opening and thank locals for their patience during construction, a community event will be held on Monday 30 March, from 9am to 12 noon.
It will include a musical performance, a complimentary coffee and treat, and Spend and Win prize draws, including the chance to win a Dine and Stay package.
Late last year the overpass and lift shafts were lifted into place either side of the rail line, in a major feat of engineering that included the use a 750-tonne crane.
This work followed the opening of the upgraded northern entrance with an accessible ramp, stairs and automatic swing door.
Over the past month crews have been working to finish drainage, electrical and CCTV works on the overpass and they have installed handrails and bluestone tiling on the stairs and lift lobby areas.
Earlier this month, local bus operations returned from the temporary bays on Lydiard Street to the station’s bus interchange, which has been reinstated.
