More than 500 Beaconsfield locals turned out on the weekend to celebrate the end of level crossing works and the new McKenna Drive road bridge, with many enjoying the thrill of riding on a steam train for the first time.
Steamrail Victoria provided free rides on a fully restored A2 Class steam locomotive from Berwick Station to East Pakenham Station, with its black engine, authentic red timber carriages and clouds of steam delighting young and old alike.
To thank the community for their patience during construction of the new road bridge, locals were treated to free food and drinks from local businesses, and enjoyed entertainment such as cartoon drawings, juggling, and face painting and ride-on vehicles for kids. Community organisations such as the Country Fire Authority also lent their support with a demonstration of skills.
Following recent works to dismantle the boom gates at the old level crossing, crews have begun packing up the site and will move out of the area in the coming months.
Landscaping and footpath widening is now complete, with approximately 80 Australian native and indigenous trees, and 75,000 plants and shrubs planted in the project area.
The southern station car park with 105 parking spaces has reopened to the public.
Getting rid of this level crossing brings the Pakenham Line one step closer to being boom gate later this year.
