Blackburn Station will be rejuvenated as part of works to remove the level crossing at Blackburn Road, with additional funding allocated this week for works for additional enhancements for Blackburn Station.
The Level Crossing Removal Project will deliver significant improvements to drainage in the area to remedy regular flooding of the Blackburn Station underpass.
New stairs and access ramps will be built, ensuring easy and Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant access to the station for all users. Entrances to the underpass will be enhanced to allow more natural light in and the handrail through the underpass will be removed creating space.
Station forecourt areas will be upgraded to improve shelter, connection to local shops and businesses, access to car parks and the bus interchange, and enhance the character of Blackburn Village. The existing playground and informal market areas will also be retained and upgraded.
Removal of the level crossing on Blackburn Road will lower the rail line underneath Blackburn Road and the pedestrian footpath will be made wider further improving north-south access for pedestrians once the boom gates are gone.
The project will also feature a section of the new shared pedestrian and cycling path, currently being delivered between Blackburn and Nunawading and a secure Parkiteer bike facility.
