Glenroy Road in Glenroy is one of the most congested roads in Melbourne’s north, with about 19,000 vehicles driving through the level crossing each day.
This level crossing will be the second to go on the Craigieburn Line, with the level crossing at Buckley Street, Essendon removed in 2018.
Extensive technical investigations since 2016 have found that lowering the rail line below Glenroy Road is the most feasible design option for removing this level crossing. The rail trench design avoids significant compulsory property acquisition, best suits the complex topography of the area and will deliver a new Glenroy Station.
We are now undertaking further technical investigations. Later this year, we will be back out with more information and locals will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the project.
The boom gates at this level crossing can be down for up to 43% of the morning peak, causing congestion for up to a kilometre along Glenroy Road. Delays will worsen as more trains and cars travel through Glenroy in the future.
Eliminating this level crossing will improve safety and travel times for the 3500 commuters that use Glenroy Station each day and those frequenting the local shops, cafes and community groups.
The level crossing at Glenroy Road will be gone in 2022 and is one of 75 that the Victorian Government has committed to removing by 2025 – with 29 already gone. More information about construction will be available as the project progresses.
