This time last year we celebrated the removal of every level crossing between Caulfield and Dandenong.
The last 3.2km stretch of the 6km of new elevated rail opened to passengers on 18 June 2018.
In addition to removing 9 level crossings along Melbourne’s busiest rail corridor, the project also delivered 5 new stations, 22.5 hectares of exciting new community spaces and parklands, a 17km bicycle and pedestrian path and improved community connections.
Since then we have monitored travel time, throughput and traffic conditions across these level crossing removal sites and the results are in – maximum travel times have been halved in the morning peak!
Not only have travel times been reduced, journeys are now more reliable, with motorists able to reasonably predict how long it will take to get from A to B.
Before the removal of these level crossings, boom gates held up motorists for up to 87 minutes in the 2-hour morning peak.
With these level crossings gone, hundreds of thousands of people are now getting where they need to go safer and sooner, despite more cars using these roads.
