Standing proudly within the Clayton Station precinct for more than a century, a heritage-listed building has been carefully relocated and restored to ensure the area’s rich history is preserved.
With plans to build the new elevated Clayton Station, the Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project identified the former ticketing office and waiting shelter as an ideal restoration opportunity.
So, in partnership with Heritage Victoria and Chisholm Institute of TAFE, Chisholm staff and more than 200 students gained hands-on experience as they spent several months carefully restoring each aspect under the expert guidance of a heritage adviser and a heritage architect.
Students from disciplines including carpentry, building and plumbing embraced the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work on a heritage-listed building, which benefited from a complete makeover while retaining important heritage aspects.
The building was salvaged in 2016 and eventually moved to Chisholm’s Dandenong campus for the refurbishment earlier this year, before being reinstated to ground level in the south of the Clayton Station precinct.
Classic photos and detailed information are on display inside the building, highlighting the area’s rich rail history.
This is complemented by several other elements installed around the new station precinct, including customised artwork, a rail timeline on bluestone pavers and markers showing the position of the original rail line.
