Construction will begin in early 2021 in Hallam and Williamstown to remove the level crossings on Hallam Road and Ferguson Street.
The boom gate removals for both projects are set to be achieved in 2022.
Hallam crossing removal
Major construction will begin in January 2021, with a contract set to be awarded to remove the Hallam Road level crossing and build a new Hallam Station.
A rail bridge will be built to remove the level crossing and improve safety, traffic flow and pedestrian connections between Cranbourne, Spring Square and Hampton Park town centre.
In response to community feedback, dual entrances will now be built as part of the new elevated station. The project will provide modern facilities for the 2200 passengers who use the station each day and improve pedestrian and cycling connections around the station precinct.
The project will be delivered by an alliance of Laing O’Rourke, Jacobs, Metro Trains Melbourne and the Level Crossing Removal Project and will create 900 local full-time jobs at peak construction.
Williamstown crossing removal
Construction on the Ferguson Street level crossing removal in Williamstown will begin in February 2021, with designs now finalised.
The rail line will be lowered under the road to remove the level crossing and a brand-new North Williamstown Station will be built.
Red brick and bluestone – some reused from the current station precinct – will feature throughout, along with new open space and an additional pedestrian crossing. The main western heritage station building will be retained.
The project will create 600 local full-time jobs at peak construction, with construction awarded to an alliance comprising McConnell Dowell, Arup, Mott McDonald, Metro Trains and the Level Crossing Removal Project.
