A contract has been awarded to remove 3 dangerous level crossings in Melbourne’s south-east to boost safety and ease congestion.

An alliance comprising Fulton Hogan Construction, Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and the Level Crossing Removal Project will deliver the $171 million-dollar contract to remove the level crossings at Station Street, Beaconsfield; Station Street, Officer and Progress Street, Dandenong South.

At Station Street, Beaconsfield, we will build a new road bridge over the rail line, with this design allowing the crossing to be removed sooner and with fewer disruptions to road and rail users.

At Station Street, Officer, where there have been 6 near misses since 2012, the level crossing will be closed to improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often.

At Progress Street, Dandenong South, the level crossing will be closed, and we will build a new road bridge connecting Progress Street and Fowler Road to service the busy industrial precinct of Dandenong South. The Fowler Road and South Gippsland Highway intersection will also be upgraded and signalised to improve traffic flow and ease congestion.

At Station Street, Beaconsfield, site offices will be established, and early works will start in July, with major works to kick off at Beaconsfield and Dandenong South later in the year.

At Officer, works will be underway early next year, with all 3 crossings to be gone for good by 2025.

The removal of these 3 dangerous level crossings will contribute to making the Pakenham Line level crossing-free, which when combined with the completion of the Metro Tunnel and high-capacity signalling, will allow up to 121,000 extra peak hour passengers on the busy line.
