Contract signed for Evans Road

The fast-tracked project to remove the Evans Road level crossing is gathering pace with a contract awarded and site establishment works starting.

An alliance comprising Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and Fulton Hogan will oversee the $54 million project to remove the level crossing.

These organisations have a strong track record having successfully removed level crossings at Grange Road in Alphington and on Lower Plenty Road in Rosanna, duplicating the Hurstbridge line between Rosanna and Heidelberg and building the new Rosanna Station.

Evans Road has been closed at the level crossing since 2005, forcing drivers to take lengthy detours and dividing the communities of Lyndhurst, Lynbrook and Cranbourne West.

These communities will be reconnected when the project is complete in 2020 and it will be significantly faster to travel across the rail line to the South Gippsland Highway.

In March 2019, the road bridge design was unveiled.

Locals influenced key components of the design, including:

  • Increased planting around retaining walls
  • Barrier installation on the west side of the bridge to separate the shared walking and cycling path
  • Further future proofing the area to make way for potential road and rail upgrades.
