A 13,000 square metre purpose-built factory in Pakenham is building concrete segments for the Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project, creating hundreds of jobs.
Work at the massive facility is about to hit peak production – with 200 local concreters, steel fixers, welders and plant operators producing up to 17 concrete segments every day.
During the factory's construction, 100 jobs were also created to build it from scratch.
Approximately 2200 of the 26-tonne segments will be trucked to Murrumbeena and lifted into place by huge gantry cranes, which are 150m long and 10 storeys high.
A second, separate pre-cast facility in Melton will produce the concrete piers that will support the elevated structure.
The $1.6 billion project will remove 9 dangerous and congested level crossings, build 5 new stations, create 11 MCGs worth of open space, in total creating 2000 jobs for Victoria.
