Final designs have been released and early works are set to start on new rail bridge in Macleod, removing the Ruthven Street level crossing and making journeys safer and less congested in Melbourne’s north east.
Getting rid of the Ruthven Street level crossing will eliminate nearly half an hour of boom gate down time during the morning peak, cutting travel times for bout 12,600 drivers each weekday.
The designs include landscaped community space connecting Rosanna Parklands with Ellesmere Parade and Ruthven Street, featuring native plantings and seating options.
Feedback from locals has helped shape the final designs, incorporating natural colours, landscaped spaces and safer connections for the community.
A new walking and cycling path will be built along Ellesmere Parade between Ruthven Street and Davies Street, creating more than 2kms of active transport connections between Macleod and Rosanna.
To complement the area’s leafy character, more than 25,500 trees, native shrubs, flowering plants and grasses will be planted.
Early works to prepare the area for construction are getting underway, with crews installing site sheds and fencing over the coming months. Major construction will begin later this year, with the boom gates gone for good and trains running on the new rail bridge in 2027.
