Frankston Station’s new facade was transformed into a technicolour backdrop on Saturday 6 October, as we celebrated the new station with the local community.
Almost 500 people gathered in the station forecourt on Young Street to take part in the evening’s festivities, which included roving performances from a percussion group, stilt walkers and mobile circus performers.
To keep with the colourful theme of the night, project team members handed out illuminated paper lanterns to those who attended, taking time out to talk about the new station and facilities as they went. A range of food trucks also provided special meal deals to feed the crowd.
The event opened with Elders from the Bunurong Land Council, Traditional Custodians of the Land, performing a Welcome to Country. Once the sun went down, the station entrance lit up in a spectacular light show, emphasising the station’s distinctive new design.
Saturday’s celebration marked the completion of the major station facilities, including new raised platforms, improved access for people with disabilities, a passenger waiting room and new lighting, hearing loops and security cameras.
The previous station was demolished in May, coinciding with a construction blitz to remove the nearby Skye/Overton Road level crossing. After only a 6-week closure the new station opened, with works continuing while trains were running.
The event was an opportunity to say thank you to the community for their patience during construction. It also allowed locals to see the new station as a modern new gateway to the Mornington Peninsula and tying in with the local coastal identity of Frankston and the nearby beach.
