Two King Parrot sculptures are now calling Union Station home, with local artist Emily Floyd’s unique integrated art installation, specially commissioned for the Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert project, taking shape. The magnificent sculptures, forged from monumental bronze, sit at either side of the station entrance on the western concourse.
Emily’s striking work is inspired by the local landscape – and the bird and insect life of the area. These sculptures have been designed to remind viewers and commuters alike of the precarious but ultimately life-affirming nature of native birds in the urban environment, along with their connection to the ecosystems around them.
“It has been an honour to create the artworks for the new station. I especially hope the King Parrots will encourage visitors to consider the values of ecology, biodiversity and care for the environment,” says Emily.
The artworks have been deliberately composed to encourage interaction with commuters and residents. The patina used to create the parrots’ hues ensures durability and longevity, in keeping with the natural surroundings of Union Station.
We predict plenty of selfies (and pats) with these new additions to the station.
“The integrated art programme has presented a wonderful opportunity to evolve the sculptures in harmony with the layered canopy and soft muted colours of Union Station.”
