It’s been a big week at the Level Crossing Removal Project. We’ve recently celebrated the removal of our 50th level crossing, which took place on the Frankston line, where we removed 5 dangerous and congested level crossings and built new stations at Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach.
Now, passengers are enjoying the new stations, trains are running and the removal of the level crossings means better safety and reduced congestion in these bayside suburbs.
But, there’s more work to do – we are getting rid of a total of 85 level crossings by 2025 and that work will continue over summer.
Works will continue at 25 level crossing removal sites during summer, with some locations requiring road closures and changes to train services so we can safely deliver the work.
More crossings to go
Another 4 level crossings will be gone for good over summer at:
- Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing
- Ferguson Street, Williamstown
- Greens Road, Dandenong South
- Clyde Road, Berwick
In addition, 2 new stations will open over summer at Williamstown North in mid December and Merinda Park in early 2022.
Changes to the way you travel
From December to February, there will be changes to train services on the Hurstbridge, Mernda, Werribee and Williamstown lines, and on the Cranbourne/Pakenham/Bairnsdale lines while works continue to remove level crossings and upgrade rail lines.
There will also be road closures at Clyde Road in Berwick and Greens Road in Dandenong South.
Work will also continue to remove 4 level crossings in Preston and on the Hurstbridge Line Duplication .
Meanwhile, track duplication as part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade will be completed in early 2022 – a year ahead of schedule – allowing 10-minute train services to be introduced shortly after. There will be changes to train services on the Cranbourne/Pakenham lines through summer.
By the end of summer, 58 level crossings will be a thing of the past.
