Four more level crossings are set to go, making Melton boom-gate free, boosting safety and easing congestion.
The level crossings at Coburns Road, Exford Road and Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina are set to be removed by 2028.
Melton is one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas and a brand-new state-of-the-art Melton Station will be built, with modern and accessible facilities to service passengers in the suburb and surrounds.
Coburns Road is a major connector to the Western Freeway and its removal will slash travel times every day, and along with the removal of Exford Road, traffic into Melton will be improved.
Ferris Road is busy and getting rid of it will help people get to and from the new Cobblebank Station. Closer to the city, removing the level crossing at Hopkins Road, Truganina will ease congestion, and allow better access for trucks travelling to and from the growing industrial centre and the Western Highway.
Early engineering assessments indicate the level crossings at Exford Road and Coburns Road will be removed by building a rail trench, while the roads will be elevated over tracks to get rid of the Hopkins Road and Ferris Road level crossings.
Getting rid of these level crossings unclogs the roads for more than 73,000 vehicles travelling in these sections each day, with the boom gates down for up to 28 minutes in the morning peak, when around 16 trains go through.
On the Melton Line, 2 level crossings have been removed, another is underway and now 4 more have been added to the list, making Melton level crossing free by 2028.
