We’ve removed 2 of Melbourne’s most dangerous and congested level crossings at Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert and built a brand-new Union Station.
The new Union Station opened on Monday 22 May, with trains running on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines through the 1.3km rail trench beneath Union and Mont Albert roads.

More trains, more often
More train services are now stopping at Union Station during the weekday peaks following a new timetable that commenced on Sunday 28 May.
The new timetable includes 3 additional morning and evening weekday services compared with the previous Surrey Hills Station timetable, providing passengers with more travel options.

What's next
As part of upcoming works, the historic Mont Albert Station building will return home to Mont Albert where it will take pride of place on a new heritage plaza that will connect Beresford Street and High Street to the Hamilton Street shopping village.
Work on the commuter car parks and landscaping will continue into spring, along with work on the new open spaces on Union Road and Montrose Street, the Mont Albert Road drop-off area, the rejuvenated Lorne Parade Reserve and Mont Albert heritage plaza.
We will also plant more than 52,000 trees, shrubs and plants in the local area.
As part of finishing works, a pair of King Parrot sculptures designed by local artist Emily Floyd will make their home at the northern and southern entrances to Union Station’s western concourse.
