New community open space for Pakenham

As works to remove 3 dangerous and congested level crossings and build new stations in Pakenham and East Pakenham continue at pace, designs have been unveiled today for the first look at the 6 MCGs of new community open space being created underneath the elevated rail line.

The design includes a 3-metre-wide shared use path under the rail bridge between McGregor Road and Main Street, improving transport connections for pedestrians and bike riders to safely access the Pakenham Station and the shopping precinct.

Other features of the new Pakenham open space include multi-purpose areas including a barbecue area, exercise equipment, garden beds, seating, basketball court, playgrounds and parklands. A Changing Places facility will also be built, for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

The Pakenham project team would like to thank the community for their ideas, which helped shape these open space designs. The open space will be ready for everyone to enjoy in 2024.

In recent months, piling work has ramped up at Pakenham as the team starts work on the foundations of the 2.5km rail bridge. Later this year, concrete piers will be installed, and the elevated rail bridge will begin to come to life.

The project will see the 3 level crossings gone for good at Main Street, McGregor Road and Racecourse Road in Pakenham in 2024, by building a rail bridge over the roads and creating 6 MCGs worth of new community open space underneath for locals to enjoy.
