Designs for the new premium Glenroy Station have been revealed today, as early works continue on the Glenroy Road level crossing removal.
As one of the most congested roads in Melbourne’s north, Glenroy Road sees about 19,000 vehicles cross the level crossing each day.
Boom gates can be down for 43% of the morning peak. The level crossing will be removed by lowering the rail line under the road, and a new modern station will be built.
Located in the centre of the bustling Glenroy shopping precinct, the new Glenroy Station will provide a modern gateway for commuters travelling to and from the area, while improving local connections in the suburb, and updating the station precinct.
The project team heard from Glenroy locals in May, with connectivity around the precinct, safety and accessibility being key issues for the community.
The ground-level station entrance and concourse will provide pedestrians with easy access across the lowered rail line, connecting Post Office Place and Hartington Street for the first time in 100 years with a dedicated pedestrian path, plus extra new paths through the precinct.
Improved landscaping in the station precinct will create a welcoming area for people to visit and enjoy.
The new rail line and station will be built slightly east of the current rail line, so trains can keep running for the majority of the works, minimising disruption.
The new premium station includes 2 lifts with stair access to each lowered platform, a comfortable waiting room with city views, undercover seating areas and improved lighting. The station also features more bicycle storage, toilets, landscaping and grassed areas.
Site preparation work has already begun to take place around the station precinct and rail line, to prepare for major construction starting next year.
The Glenroy Road boom gates will be gone for good and the new Glenroy Station open for passengers in 2022.
