Pakenham bus interchange opens

The final piece of the new Pakenham Station precinct is in place following the opening of a new bus interchange that will provide locals with easier, safer access to public transport.

We removed 3 level crossings at McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road in Pakenham, and built new Pakenham and East Pakenham stations.

This includes extending the rail line by 2.5km and building the new East Pakenham Station to provide more transport options for the booming suburb.

The new bus interchange services 6 local bus routes, 5 regional routes and 2 schools.

It will create a better connection between nearby suburbs and towns, and the 2 new stations via a new 3m wide shared use path under the rail bridge between McGregor Road and Main Street.

Commuters will also be able to safely transfer between buses and trains and access the new community space and local businesses.

Six MCGs worth of community space was created by elevating the rail line over the 3 level crossings.

This includes a dual-purpose half basketball court built near Main Street, featuring both basketball and soccer nets, a fitness circuit near McGregor Road, and more than 300,000 trees, shrubs and grasses.

We are removing every level crossing on the Pakenham Line by 2025, improving safety and easing congestion on local roads in time for the Metro Tunnel opening, which will transform the way people live, work and travel in Melbourne’s south-east.

In total 110 level crossings are being removed by 2030, with 84 already gone for good.
