The Fitzgerald Road Level Crossing Removal Project is setting a benchmark for sustainability on major road and rail projects, delivering benefits for both the environment and local community.
Scratch beneath the surface of the Fitzgerald Road level crossing and you’ll find a treasure trove of colour for a great cause.
The latest project initiative sees 450m of pipes installed using only recycled materials.
Victorian-manufactured, the eye-catching pipes are speckled due to using a wide array of plastic materials.
Besides the many environmental benefits, the curbside waste used from local councils has an infinite lifespan underground. The flexibility of the pipes helps in different ground conditions such as clay, making them ideal for large scale infrastructure projects.
Here are some impressive numbers - 37 pipes were installed, using over 100,000 recycled bottles. 250,000 bottles will be used throughout the project to make 73 pipes, equaling close to 65km of waste milk bottles laid end to end. That’s almost the distance between Docklands’ Marvel Stadium and GMHBA Stadium in Geelong!
This initiative is in addition to more than 200 trees and 150,000 shrubs and grasses that will be planted as part of the project.
It’s all part of our commitment to providing liveable, productive, resilient and sustainable projects across Victoria.
