We’re getting on with the job of removing the dangerous and congested level crossings at Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert.
Our teams are working around the clock on one of the biggest engineering projects ever undertaken in Melbourne’s east.
The new 1.3km rail trench is well underway, with over 70,000 cubic metres of material excavated, a volume equivalent to filling up about 30 Olympic swimming pools! We’ve also been installing the last of our 1,262 concrete piles that form the trench walls, and seen our trench home to 5 piling rigs, along with 6 dozers and 23 excavators.
Keen-eyed locals may have spotted our most recent addition to site, with the delivery and placement of 14 concrete Super-T beams. Measuring at 30 metres long and weighing a whopping 60 tonnes each, these beams will be positioned across the 1.3km long rail trench to form the foundation of the new Union Station western concourse.
