Your new eco-friendly Union Station

Back to Newsfeed

We're implementing initiatives including solar power, rainwater collection, new greenery, and the latest electric vehicle technology on our construction site and at the new Union Station.

A 70-kilowatt solar panel array on top of the station will be one of the largest in the Melbourne metropolitan train network. The solar panels will be able to produce carbon neutral power and decrease the demand of the energy grid.

The station will feature tanks which will collect up to 15,000 litres of rainwater from the station canopies. This water will be used in the station toilets and for cleaning.

More than 52,000 new trees, shrubs, plants, and grasses will be planted across Surrey Hills and Mont Albert, including a range of native and exotic plant species that have been carefully selected to reduce the need for frequent watering. We’ll also plant a mix of established trees for immediate effect and young trees to ensure the landscaping has the maximum opportunity of growing successfully.

Out on site we're reducing greenhouse gas emissions everyday by using renewable and alternative energy sources to power our works to remove the 2 level crossings and build the new station. We’re using some of the latest hybrid and fully electric machinery, and we've made the switch to biodiesel for as much of our diesel-operated equipment and machinery as possible. We’re also using solar powered lighting towers and site sheds.

When construction is complete next year, the new Union Station will be one of the most eco-friendly stations in Melbourne.
