A contractor has been identified to deliver crucial early works for Melbourne Airport Rail, getting the ball rolling on what is set to be a landmark year for the long-awaited infrastructure project.

Construction company Laing O’Rourke emerging as the managing contractor to start design development to prepare for delivery of the Early Works Package, involving the relocation and protection of key utilities along the route to clear the way for major construction.

A range of utility service providers will be closely worked with during the design and delivery of the works to minimise any impacts to locals and businesses.

Laing O’Rourke has previously delivered several level crossing removals across Melbourne and was recently awarded a contract to manage initial and early works for the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East project between Cheltenham and Box Hill.

Laing O’Rourke will now work with the project team to finalise designs, develop construction methodologies and finalise a works contract. Construction on early works is expected to start this year, subject to finalising contract details and all relevant planning and environmental approvals.

Other works packages released to market to date are progressing and continuing to generate strong interest from the market.
