Campbell Arcade restored and reopened

Beloved Melbourne time-warp Campbell Arcade is open again.

The perfectly pink 1950s era arcade was closed in 2022 to allow work on the connection between Flinders Street and Town Hall stations. The connection will open later this year, allowing passengers to transfer between the two stations without having to tap off.

Over 3 years, we have restored Campbell Arcade to its former glory, with heritage features including display windows, granite columns and curved tiled walls repaired and cleaned.

Major upgrades have also been made to lighting, ventilation, fire and security systems to make the arcade safer and more pleasant for pedestrians.

There are 8 shopfronts within the arcade, with businesses moving in soon. Display cases, known as the ‘dirty dozen’ have been preserved and  will be handed over to the care of City of Melbourne.

The cases are currently showcasing the story of the Metro Tunnel Project from planning through to major construction, test trains and completed stations.

Passengers can now get to the arcade – and through to Flinders Street Station – from Degraves Street, opening another access point to one of Melbourne’s busiest stations.

Heritage restrictions mean there is not an accessible entry to Campbell Arcade from Flinders and Degraves Street, but new lifts installed inside Flinders Street Station mean the arcade is accessible to wheelchair users or people with limited mobility from the Degraves Subway.
