Major construction at Town Hall Station is complete.
A new gateway to the heart of the city, the station is located under Swanston Street between Collins and Flinders Streets, with a main entrance in City Square.
It includes a pedestrian underpass to Flinders Street Station via Campbell Arcade and Degraves Street subway, so passengers will be able to easily change between Metro Tunnel and City Loop services without tapping off.
The station will have 3 main entrances at City Square, Federation Square and inside the new Town Hall Place development on Swanston Street next to Young & Jackson.
The station features:
- A grand entrance hall below City Square with a roof supported by high columns shaped like tree branches.
- The artwork Barerarerungar by Maree Clarke at the Federation Square entrance.
- A trinocular design of three overlapping tunnels at platform level with a cathedral-like ceiling.
- 10m-high arched ceiling above the platforms featuring chandelier lights designed and made in Melbourne.
It’s no coincidence that the two CBD stations – Town Hall and State Library – are the last to be completed. The CBD location, along with their depth always meant a longer and more complex build compared to Arden, Parkville and Anzac stations. Construction on Town Hall Station began in 2017 and required excavation as deep as a 5 storey building.
Town Hall Station will open with the Metro Tunnel later this year.
