New render alert! See how Town Hall Station fits into Melbourne's iconic City Square.
City Square will return to the public in 2025 as a redesigned public area in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, after being closed in 2017 for construction of Town Hall Station.
The space will be landscaped with native species, and previous water features will be replaced with new architectural features that both honour the past and open up new spaces for cultural and civic activity.
At the centre will be a permanent Smoking Ceremony dish that was developed with Wurundjeri Elders, including Woi-wurrung language and artwork etched into surrounding paving and throughout the square.
These elements are part of the Metro Tunnel’s Connection to Country initiative which celebrates the Traditional Owners of the lands of the Kulin Nation on which the 5 new metro stations are built.
A station entrance is located at the northern end of the square and a digital interactive version of the original Mockridge Fountain will be integrated into the station entrance area.
The bronze Loretta Quinn sculpture Beyond the Ocean of Existence will return to its original location on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Lane. Other previous favourites, Warrin the Wombat and Larry LaTrobe have been relocated from City Square to Birrarung Marr and adjacent to Melbourne Town Hall respectively.
The Town Hall Station City Square entrance will reduce pedestrian congestion along Swanston Street and relieve pressure on the Flinders Street/Swanston Street pedestrian crossing when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.
