The Big Switch is live on the Metro Tunnel

Back to Newsfeed

The Metro Tunnel has welcomed its first peak hour commuters, with the Big Switch turning on extra services for the dedicated Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines.

Victorians have loved exploring the Metro Tunnel, with more than 800,000 passengers visiting the new stations, and trains travelling more than 64,000 kilometres through the tunnel since it opened on 30 November 2025.

During the peak, trains will arrive at each of our new Metro Tunnel stations up to every 3 minutes, with trains running at least every 10 minutes between Watergardens and Dandenong stations in both directions for most of the day, 7 days a week.

Frankston Line trains have returned to the City Loop for the first time in 5 years. Trains run anticlockwise around the loop and no longer run cross city to Werribee or Williamstown.

The Metro Tunnel is the biggest transformation of the city’s public transport system in 40 years, and it has doubled the size of Melbourne’s underground rail network. First beginning planning in 2015, before major construction began in 2019.
