We're getting a head-start on North East Link's tree planting program, well before major construction starts.
We are looking for local nurseries to partner with us to grow the first of at least 30,000 trees. For each tree that needs to be removed as part of the project, 2 will be replanted.
Our specialists have also started to collect seeds from shrubs and significant trees so new trees can be grown.
Based on the current reference design, approximately 16,000 amenity trees are expected to be removed. Around 75 per cent of these trees are in areas already reserved for road upgrades.
Once builders are appointed, they will be held to tough requirements to avoid as many trees and native vegetation as possible.
The Banyule Flats, Warringal Parklands and the Yarra River will be protected as the twin, 6km North East Link tunnels will run from the Simpson Barracks to Bulleen Road near the Eastern Freeway.
As part of the project’s commitment to the environment, a tree canopy guide will also form part of works, with planting to be used to shade walking and cycling paths open spaces and provide habitat for wildlife.
