More than 200 native and indigenous trees have started being planted at Belle Vue Primary School in Balwyn North.
They are the first of at least 30,000 trees that will be planted across Melbourne’s north and east for the North East Link Project.
Planting at Belle Vue will create a dense screen along the north-west edge of the school's playing fields and includes an extra 2,000 shrubs and plants.
A further two stages of planting will happen at the school later this year, including two bush-tucker gardens for students.
The planting will grow a thicker, healthier understory canopy for the school's existing trees and create opportunities for student-led activities as part of the school's sustainability program.
Belle Vue has been a ResourceSmart School since 2015 and is working towards becoming a 5-star sustainable school.
The trees and plants have been sourced from and planted by Ecodynamics Nursery, a social enterprise that invests 50% of profits back into community greening initiatives.
The nursery is one of dozens of local and social enterprises who have registered their interest in being part of North East Link’s tree planting program.
