Sunbury Line power upgrades and a new substation in St Albans

Back to Newsfeed

In 2021 the Sunbury Line Upgrade will begin building the new St Albans substation at the corner of Willaton and Bent streets, within land set aside for rail purposes.

We chose this site after assessing multiple potential locations against the requirements for a substation site including the size and configuration of the site, proximity to the rail lines and existing rail infrastructure.

Construction will be undertaken in 2 phases:

  • From mid-2021, site establishment works will begin that will include temporary fencing around the site, establishing site amenities for staff, tree removal and installing protection zones for trees. Some drainage, sewerage and earthworks will also be required during site establishment.
  • From late 2021, major construction of the substation building will begin, including piling and non-destructive digging.

The St Albans substation is expected to be completed by 2022.

Detailed construction information will be provided to local communities prior to the start of major works.
