Gippsland Line blitz signals progress

Back to Newsfeed

Work to prepare the Gippsland Line for a new signalling system leapt ahead while coaches replaced trains for 3 weeks in June.

More than 350 crew members worked more than 28,000 hours, carrying out signal construction work, including underground boring, trenching and pipe installation.

Close to 2000m of cabling was installed between Nar Nar Goon and Warragul, and between Moe and Traralgon, comprising 1156m in trenches and 793m in underground bores.

The new signalling system, in conjunction with track works and station upgrades already delivered as part of the Gippsland Line Upgrade, will enable more services and also future-proof the line.

This work was coordinated with level crossing removal works in Pakenham, which include adding 2 dedicated tracks near East Pakenham to allow V/Line trains to bypass Metro trains, making travel more reliable.

Traralgon Station’s new accessible pedestrian overpass has been supporting Victorians of all abilities to make the most of fairer regional fares over the past few months.

Passengers are also enjoying the benefits of upgrades to accessibility and safety at 3 other stations including an upgraded, more accessible underpass at Morwell, a formalised car park with accessible spaces at Longwarry, and platform improvements at Bunyip.

Further disruptions will take place to complete the new signalling system, along with safety testing and driver training to enable much-needed extra services between the peaks between Traralgon and Melbourne.
