Nearly 7000m of new tracks were installed as part of major upgrades to the Gippsland Line while trains weren’t running in January.
Almost 700 crew members worked more than 94,000 hours installing new track at Garfield, Bunyip, Longwarry and Morwell while coaches replaced trains for Metro Tunnel work.
To allow the new ballast and track to be laid, nearly 25,000 cubic metres of fill and ballast – equivalent to the capacity of 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools – was excavated!
Our crew also completed formation work including earthworks, drainage, stabilisation, and excavation to build the new track.
At Traralgon Station, work is continuing to make the lifts operational and finish the paths that link to the new pedestrian overpass.
Major construction of upgrades to Bunyip, Longwarry, Morwell and Traralgon stations is complete, with station precinct work to be finished in the coming months.
Further disruption to trains will occur to allow for testing and the enabling of the additional services on the line.
