Traralgon locals gathered last month to celebrate the opening of the new accessible pedestrian overpass at Traralgon Station delivered as part of the Gippsland Line Upgrade.

A community event was held at Traralgon Station on Saturday 29 April to celebrate the opening.

The event featured a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country from the land’s traditional owners, the Gunaikurnai.Gippsland singer-songwriter Libby Willems performed her song Ridin’ on the Gippsland Line, and the event also included games, face-painting and a stall from Traralgon and District Historical Society.

The new overpass has a bright, light interior and the outside has been clad to protect users from the weather.

Lifts in the new overpass give people of all abilities the option to cross the rail line in the centre of town. It will also connect the new second platform at the station for train passengers when the project is complete.

Other improvements at Traralgon Station include rebuilding the second platform to enable more frequent and reliable services, relocating the bus interchange and providing more seating, shelter and shade.

Artwork by local artist Marilyn Fenton has been sandblasted into the station’s new forecourt using traditional Gunaikurnai line patterns depicting men and women, travel, meeting and the five Gunaikurnai clans.

Major construction on station upgrades at Bunyip, Longwarry, Morwell and Traralgon as part of the Gippsland Line Upgrade is complete. Minor station precinct works will be finished in the coming months.

The project is delivering a new signalling system to enable additional services and future-proof the line.

Further disruptions will take place to enable these much-needed extra services between the peaks between Traralgon and Melbourne.
