Major works are now complete on the new intersection with traffic lights at Bald Hill Road and Racecourse Road.
As part of the Pakenham Roads Upgrade project, crews opened the new-look intersection on schedule on Friday 20 February in time for the morning peak.
The new four-way intersection replaces the former congested roundabout, making for safer and easier travelling for all residents, freight traffic and commuters flowing between Racecourse Road, Bald Hill Road and surrounding streets.
You can now get to all your favourite businesses safely, with signalised right hand turns on each approach to the intersection, and U-turns permitted to assist drivers to access businesses with new left in left out arrangements on Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road and Racecourse Road.
Crews worked day and night to finish off the eastern side of the intersection, build new driveways to connect businesses to the new lanes, lay new asphalt, install traffic lights and line marking before opening. They will continue to work around the upgraded intersection, including finishing off the new medians while keeping traffic flowing in all directions during the day.
Works on the new lanes on Racecourse Road and Healesville Koo-Wee Rup Road are also well under way and will be the last major part of this project to be completed.
There will be night time disruptions to place the final layers of asphalt as major works on the Racecourse Road Upgrade wind up in mid-2026.
Works on the Pakenham Roads Upgrade also include the addition of an extra lane in each direction on the freeway between McGregor and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup roads to connect the entry and exit ramps between the 2 upgraded interchanges, with previous works to create an additional bridge over the freeway completed in 2024.
This intersection is the last major intersection to be completed as part of $1 billion worth of transport infrastructure upgrades in Pakenham alongside the level crossing removals and new stations at Pakenham and Pakenham East as well as works to upgrade Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road and McGregor Road.
