Eastern Freeway upcoming disruptions

Back to Newsfeed

As we prepare to open a new wider and safer Estelle Street bridge in Bulleen, we will demolish the old bridge over the Eastern Freeway.

To safely remove the old bridge, the Eastern Freeway will need to close in both directions between Bulleen and Doncaster roads from 10pm, Friday 7 November to 5am, Monday 10 November.

While we have installed the new Estelle Street bridge structure, further works are required to finish the bridge to prepare it for public use in late 2025. We need to complete some finishing works, including concreting the bridge deck, installing screening and handrails, and building connections to the shared paths along the Koonung Creek Trail.

To safely open the bridge to the public and to avoid lengthier freeway disruptions, no walking or cycling across the freeway will be available near Estelle Street, Bulleen, and Carron Street, Balwyn North, for up to three weeks. A walking and cycling detour will be in place but, due to the length of the detour, we recommend making alternative travel arrangements during this time.

Crews will also use the weekend closure from Friday 7 November to Monday 10 November to complete other works along the freeway, reducing the number of future freeway disruptions. These works include asphalting, line marking and drainage works, relocating utilities, upgrading the Bulleen Road and Doncaster Road bridges, and building new noise walls.

Weekend closure of Eastern Freeway

A full weekend closure of the Eastern Freeway will be in place from 10pm, Friday 7 November to 5am, Monday 10 November between Doncaster Road and Bulleen Road.

Also, during this time, freeway ramp closures will be in place and no parking or stopping will be allowed along Doncaster Road between Greythorn and Burke roads and at the intersection of Doncaster and Burke roads to ease traffic congestion.

Most closures will be overnight to minimise disruption during peak travel times. However, significant delays of up to 90 minutes are expected during the full weekend closure, with motorists encouraged to plan ahead and avoid the Eastern Freeway.

Electronic signs and detours will be in place to guide road users.
