Eastern Freeway upcoming disruptions

Back to Newsfeed

The Eastern Freeway is set for disruptions from August as crews build new bridges over the freeway. The Eastern Freeway will need to close for the first time since it was last upgraded in the 1990s, to build 2 new walking and cycling bridges over the Eastern Freeway at Heyington Avenue, Mont Albert North and Estelle Street, Bulleen.

There will be a series of overnight freeway closures between Bulleen and Doncaster roads from August to safely install the new Estelle Street bridge.

Crews will also use the closures as an opportunity to complete works on upgrading the Doncaster Road interchange, which reduces the number of future disruptions. These works include building foundations for the city-side of the Doncaster Road bridge, drainage and asphalting works, and installing smart on-road technology.

Weekend closure of Eastern Freeway

A full weekend closure of the Eastern Freeway will be in place from the night of Friday 5 September to the morning of Monday 8 September between Doncaster Road and Tram Road, to safely remove the existing bridge and install the new bridge at Heyington Avenue. There will also be freeway ramp closures during this time.

The wider, safer new bridges will improve connections for people walking and cycling across the freeway. The Heyington bridge, as well as the new bridge at Estelle Street in Bulleen, are expected to open late 2025.

Most closures will be overnight to minimise disruption during peak travel times. However, significant delays of up to 90 minutes are expected during the full weekend closure, with motorists encouraged to plan ahead and avoid the area.

Electronic signs and detours will be in place to guide road users.
