Improvements to a busy Greenvale intersection have hit a big milestone as part of the Mickleham Road Upgrade – Stage 1.
Major works at the road’s intersection with Lemonwood Drive and Hillview Road recently reached the halfway point in a boost to the upgrade’s aim of improving safety and easing congestion.
Lemonwood Drive reopened at Mickleham Road a week ahead of schedule after crews finished upgrading the intersection’s western side.
Lemonwood Drive had been closed since early October so crews could safely complete the improvements.
The Lemonwood Drive works involved the installation of 813 metres of kerb and 1.3 kilometres of drainage. Crews also laid 6,724 tonnes of pavement and asphalt, equivalent in weight to 108 E-class trams.
With the upgrade of the intersection’s western side now complete, crews are set to start major works on the Hillview Road eastern side early next year.
The intersection improvements include the installation of new traffic lights and street lighting as well as construction of dedicated turning lanes and shared paths for walking and cycling.
Once complete on both sides, the improvements will make the intersection safer and more reliable for all users.
Over the next few months drivers will also see crews continuing construction of the upgrade’s new northbound lanes on Mickleham Road between Dellamore Boulevard and Somerton Road.
Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade will also see the roundabout at Somerton and Mickleham roads replaced with a new traffic light intersection, including priority bus lanes, to better manage traffic flow.
The upgrade will improve safety and congestion for the 25,000 drivers using the road daily.
The Mickleham Road Upgrade – Stage 1 is scheduled for completion in mid-2025.
