Greenvale's green boost with social benefits

Landscaping works for the Mickleham Road Upgrade – Stage 1 have combined social benefits with a green boost for Greenvale.

We partnered with social enterprises YMCA ReBuild and Brite to supply and plant native species as part of the landscaping, providing vital job opportunities for their clients.

YMCA ReBuild worked with young people at risk of entering or re-entering the justice system, providing meaningful employment, training and pathways to sustainable careers. ReBuild’s work on the upgrade gave participants valuable hands-on experience in landscaping, enhancing their skills and confidence while contributing to a transformative infrastructure project.

Brite’s participants, who live with disability, gained experience in propagating and supplying the landscaping works’ native vegetation, including grasses and trees. This meaningful work helped develop their skills and independence while demonstrating the importance of inclusive employment in achieving shared success.

The partnership initiative highlights Big Build’s commitment to creating opportunities that benefit communities beyond just the provision of transport infrastructure.

The use of specially selected native plants for the Mickleham Road Upgrade – Stage 1 will also provide sustainable, drought-tolerant landscaping for generations to come.

Stage 1 has added lanes in both directions and upgraded key intersections between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard. It has also built sections of shared-use paths for pedestrian and cyclists, boosting active transport opportunities in Greenvale.

Major works on the project were completed in December 2024, more than 6 months ahead of schedule.
