The Ison Road overpass and extension is open to traffic – 3 months ahead of schedule.
The project gives Werribee motorists a vital new connection, improving journey reliability, reducing congestion on local roads and a direct route to the Princes Freeway for jobs, services, and travel to surrounding communities.
The new overpass across the Melbourne-Geelong rail line links to a 1.3km, four-lane road, connecting Ison Road to Geelong Road and the Princes Freeway interchange.
The $194 million project also includes new traffic lights, an upgraded Ison Road and Werribee Main Road intersection and new walking and cycling paths, making it easier and safer for people to move around the growing Wyndham community.
More than 29,000 daily journeys are expected to use the new link by 2036, helping meet the needs of Melbourne’s rapidly expanding west.
Finishing works, including landscaping, lighting and final asphalting, will continue until later in 2026.
Several benefits from the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange Upgrade are also being delivered early through the Ison Road Project, including a new intersection with traffic lights at Ison Road and Werribee Main Road and a new roundabout linking the Princes Freeway city-bound off-ramp to Wests Road, Geelong Road and Maltby Bypass Service Centre, improving traffic flow.
Now that the new road is open, the Level Crossing Removal Project have permanently closed Galvin Road at the level crossing.
Concrete barriers are in place at Alfred Road/Nattarak Avenue and at Galvin Road/Bulban Road roundabout to close Galvin Road.
With Galvin Road closed, locals can use the new Ison Road overpass to travel above the rail line as a safer alternative to the level crossing.
These upgrades are creating a better and more connected road network, making travel more seamless in the west.
The Ison Road Overpass was jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments with the Extension delivered by Big Builds Road on behalf of Wyndham City Council.
The Ison Road overpass and extension is providing Wyndham's growing community with a vital new link to the Princes Freeway, improving connectivity, enhancing safety and reducing congestion.
