Children from nearby Playmakers Early Learning recently visited the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade to learn more about road safety, construction and how the project will improve connections for the local community.
The project team welcomed the Playmakers cohort for a morning of construction-themed activities and a guided visit to the project site in Altona Meadows.
After learning about personal protective equipment (PPE) and the importance of staying safe around construction sites, the children put on high-vis vests and Big Build Roads hard hats before walking to the Point Cook Road bridge.
The guided walk provided an opportunity to reinforce the importance of following safety instructions and staying together when moving around construction areas.
Back at Playmakers, the project team supported a Stop/Slow activity, where the children practiced road safety and traffic awareness while navigating a small vehicle course.
The session also included a reading of I Want to Be an Engineer, giving the children an opportunity to learn more about the people and skills involved in designing and delivering major infrastructure projects.
Located close to the intersection and adjacent to the project site sheds, Playmakers is part of the local community. The visit provided an opportunity for the project team to engage with children who regularly see construction activity in their neighbourhood and help build their understanding of road safety and the project.
The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade team, alongside BMD Group, delivered the session with a focus on providing a safe and informative experience for the children and connecting the project with the local community.
The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade is replacing the existing roundabout with traffic lights, providing safer and more direct connections through the intersection.
The upgrade will also include a new freeway off-ramp and safer pedestrian crossings, helping make it easier and safer for people travelling through the area.
