The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade has reached a significant milestone, with the construction contract awarded to Australian-owned BMD Construction. The project, designed to reduce travel times, improve safety, and enhance walking and cycling connections, is now progressing rapidly, with completion targeted for mid-2027.
Key Developments:
- The former roundabout has been removed, making way for a new signalized intersection. Temporary line marking is in place to maintain traffic flow during construction.
- Underground works—including drainage, gas, and telecommunications—are underway, preparing the site for major activities commencing January 2026.
- Safety barriers have been installed along the Princes Freeway near the Point Cook Road exit ramp and intersection.
Upcoming Construction and Closures: From January 2026, work will begin on the Point Cook Road entry ramp to the Princes Freeway, Geelong-bound. The ramp will be temporarily closed from 10pm, Monday 12 January until early March 2026. Detours will be in place via Dunnings or Sneydes roads and Boardwalk Boulevard for Point Cook residents, and via Railway Avenue, Merton Street, and Newland Street for Altona Meadows.
Permanent Access Changes: Upon completion, some local road and property access will be changed to left-in/left-out only, including permanent changes at Fitzpatrick Drive and Lunn Court, and for select properties on Point Cook Road.
Safety First: A reduced speed limit of 40km/h is now in effect on Point Cook Road (between Triholm Avenue and Carinza Avenue) and Central Avenue (between Bruce Comben Reserve and the entry ramp to Princes Freeway) to protect workers and road users.
