A new and improved Craigieburn Road and Mickleham Road intersection has opened to traffic, easing congestion and improving traffic flow through Yuroke and western Craigieburn.
The new intersection is now open, thanks to construction crews working around the clock through April and May to complete the final layers of asphalting and installation of traffic lights at the intersection, replacing the existing roundabout.
All sides of the intersection have been widened to accommodate dedicated right hand turning lanes and left hand turning slip lanes. The upgrade has new traffic signals, and pedestrian crossings and traffic islands at the intersection, including new pedestrian crossing lights and new line marking.
Part of the Craigieburn Road Upgrade, the project has seen more than 160,000 cubic metres of material moved, 100,000 tons of crushed rock and 30,000 tonnes of asphalt laid since project started.
Some minor works including the installation of line markings, footpaths, landscaping and street lighting will continue. During these works, speed and lane restrictions will be in place to ensure the safety of all road users.
Now that the intersection is reconfigured, motorists are encouraged to take extra care when driving through the area and be mindful of altered traffic conditions.
With the upgrade of the Craigieburn Road and Mickleham Road intersection reaching this important milestone, the 28,000 vehicles that use this road corridor each day can look forward to improved traffic flow. The additional lane capacity will alleviate the congestion experienced during the morning and afternoon peaks, with queues backing up with vehicles seeking a route to the Tullamarine Freeway
The new intersection is 1 of 8 to be upgraded on Craigieburn Road between Mickleham Road and Hume Highway – with traffic lights to be added to the intersections of Balyang Way, Dorchester Street and Cimberwood Drive and upgraded intersections at Vantage Boulevard, Aitken Boulevard, Lygon Drive, Bridgewater Road and Hanson Road.
The Craigieburn Road Upgrade is scheduled to be fully completed in 2025.
