The release of a new artist impression is giving locals in Craigieburn a glimpse into the future, showing what the Craigieburn Road-Hume Highway intersection - being built as part of the Craigieburn Road Upgrade - will look like when complete.
A new high-resolution 3D animation, released on the project’s website this month, also shows people how traffic will flow through the Hardy Avenue intersection once the congested roundabout is removed and replaced with traffic signals.
A first look at the artist impression offers a glimpse into how Craigieburn will be revitalised by each new intersection, improving safety and efficiency.
Drivers will benefit from the addition of a third south-bound right turn lane from Craigieburn Road onto the Hume Highway.
This means anyone heading towards the city during the peak, will benefit from the additional turning lane as it will increase capacity and reduce queuing at the intersection.
Adding more through and turning lanes at Hume Highway-Craigieburn Road will help clear congestion at the suburb’s busiest intersection, with approximately 50,000 motorists moving through this critical juncture every day.
Hume Highway is a key route, particularly for freight travelling to and from Sydney. The project will also support the north-south freight link connecting inner Melbourne with the future Beveridge Intermodal Freight Terminal.
The artist impression highlights how the expanded intersections will integrate into the surrounding urban landscape, including new cycling and walking paths, and transform the way traffic moves through a future signalised intersection at Hardy Avenue as well.
Upgrading the intersection will significantly improve vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian safety at one of Craigieburn’s most critical junctions.
Work at the Hume Highway intersection over the past year has focused primarily on building additional turn lanes on Hume Highway, now starting work on the Craigieburn Road side of the intersection marks significant progress on the project and another step closer toward the project finish line.
Construction crews are currently focusing efforts on completing utility relocations and preparing for a spring blitz on Craigieburn Road between Hanson Road and Aitken Boulevard.
The Hume Highway intersection is one of seven to be upgraded on Craigieburn Road between Mickleham Road and Hume Highway – with traffic lights to be added to Balyang Way, Dorchester Street and Cimberwood Drive, while roundabouts will be replaced with traffic lights at Waterview Boulevard and Hardy Avenue.
Craigieburn Road connects residential areas in the north to key routes, nearby freeways and the Melbourne Airport, carrying up to 28,000 vehicles each day.
Its upgrade will improve journey times, slash congestion, improve public transport connections and keep cyclists and pedestrians safe from busy traffic.
The Craigieburn Road Upgrade is scheduled to be fully completed in 2025.
