Works are underway to restore the San Remo Bridge to ensure it can provide safe and reliable access to and from Phillip Island for many years to come.
The Victorian Government has invested $50 million to rehabilitate the San Remo bridge, including works to restore its service life and improve its long-term durability for vehicles and pedestrians.
Also known as the Phillip Island Bridge, the bridge connects San Remo on mainland Victoria and Newhaven on Phillip Island and carries approximately 3.5 million tourists who visit the island each year, and between 10,000 and 15,000 vehicles of varying sizes each day, depending on the season.
The works are highly technical and need to be completed carefully to protect the marine life and the environment. Construction is anticipated to be completed by mid-2028.
The bridge will remain open to traffic and pedestrians throughout construction. When required, lane closures or pedestrian path closures will be planned to minimise disruption.
As most works will take place underneath the bridge to rehabilitate the structure, there will be minimal road disruptions to the community. Crews will generally work between the hours of 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 1pm Saturday. There will be some works undertaken at nights, Sundays or on Public Holidays.
There will be no impacts on bus stops or public transport services. Access for marine vessels under the bridge will always remain available under 1 of the 3 middle spans.
