Victorian first bridge build driving new wave of construction professionals

In a Victorian first, a scaled down replica of a steel cantilever bridge will be built by 20 construction graduates, as part of an initiative inspiring the state’s next generation of infrastructure leaders.

The Constructionarium Australia – Victorian Build 2022 will give participants hands on experience in managing and working collaboratively to deliver a project and help to improve problem solving skills and leadership.

The program connects Constructionarium Australia, Major Road Projects Victoria, BMD and Arcadis to upskill graduates from across each organisation.

The program will select participants from all disciplines, who will work together to plan, tender, build and hand over a replica scale project of a bridge structure – demonstrating commitment to addressing the skills shortage across the infrastructure industry.

The completed steel bridge structure will measure up at approximately 25 metres long, weighing 5 tonnes.

Originating in Queensland, Constructionarium is a hands-on learning experience that covers the latest construction theory, including Lean Methodologies, BIM (Building Information Modelling) and Digital Engineering. Participants then undertake a 5-day real build of a scaled down structure.

Participants gain experience in all aspects of an engineering project including project management, communications, stakeholder engagement, design development, environmental and planning work, safety, budgetary control, and timely project delivery.

This training program provides an opportunity for those newly entering Victoria’s civil construction industry to safely learn about the project life cycle; key roles across client, designer, contractor and supply chain; and how a culture of collaboration positively impacts on project success.
