Major works on the Watson Street Interchange Upgrade will ramp up this August, with crews moving into the next phase of construction to improve access to the Hume Freeway and make travel through Wallan safer and easier.
The next stage of works will see the existing north-facing freeway ramps on Watson Street realigned to connect with the new interchange traffic lights.
To safely deliver these works, both north-facing freeway ramps between Watson Street and the Hume Freeway will close from 9pm Monday 3 August until mid-November.
While the temporary closure of both northern ramps will change how people travel through the area, this approach accelerates construction, minimises the overall period of disruption and helps complete the upgraded interchange sooner.
The ramp closures will provide access for crews to build the new freeway ramp connections, with works also including new drainage, pavement, kerbs, traffic lights, street lighting, landscaping and signage. The project team is coordinating these works with the Northern Highway Intersection Upgrade to help manage impacts and minimise disruption for the Wallan community.
During the closure, motorists travelling to or from the Hume Freeway north of Watson Street will need to detour via Epping-Kilmore Road. Delays of up to 20 minutes are expected, with motorists encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow detour signs and traffic controller directions.
The upgraded shared walking and cycling path along Watson Street will reopen from 5am Wednesday 5 August, restoring pedestrian access along Watson Street. Free community and school shuttle services will finish on Friday 7 August.
Additional lane closures and traffic management will be in place on the Hume Freeway and Watson Street at times as crews continue construction.
The Watson Street Interchange Upgrade will deliver safer connections, improved traffic flow and better access to key local roads and the Hume Freeway for the growing Wallan community.
