SRL’s eye on safety

Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is supercharging construction site safety with the use of innovative technology – trialling an artificial intelligence system to keep the community and workers safe while work powers ahead on SRL East.

October is National Safety Month, a reminder of the importance of building safe and healthy workplaces for all Australians. On the SRL East Clayton site, the Blindsight camera system is helping prevent accidents with its intuitive alerts.

Mounted on the back of excavators, Blindsight acts like an extra set of eyes — using sensors to detect people, vehicles and other dangers in the operator’s blind spots.

The in-cab alert system features LED light alerts, audio beeps and vibrations when an object or person is detected.

It’s part of a host of existing on-site health and safety measures – including bollards, spotters, protective gear and stringent safety processes – to reduce the most common incidents caused by heavy equipment moving around construction sites.

Construction of SRL East between Cheltenham and Box Hill is now underway, creating the first of 8000 jobs. SRL East will deliver 26km of twin tunnels and 6 brand new underground stations and quick journeys between major hospitals, universities, retail and employment districts.

Blindsight is currently being trialled at the SRL East site in Clayton, where a micro tunnel boring machine is working to move a 630m sewer pipe, as part of the first stage of works to pave the way for major construction.
